Eleven days after Bella's report is sent regarding the Cyndex tests, she is granted another visit with Nicky. The members of the Courtney family pull together quickly, hiding a transponder in a bicycle pump for Nicky; they remove nets and fishing gear from the Lancer and equip it for the upcoming rescue mission and arrange the coordination of Garry in the Lear jet and Sean on the trawler with twenty hand-picked Ballantyne Scouts. The day arrives and Bella boards a flight while Sean goes over the last minute details aboard the Lancer. Bella spots Nicky as soon as the plane taxis in. He runs to her but then controls himself and shakes her hand while she hands out cigarettes to the guards. The atmosphere is more relaxed.
