Summary

The first story of this novel is titled “Cast Long Shadows.” It opens in London's Shadow Market in the year 1901. Brother Zachariah, who was named Jem Carstairs before joining the order of the Silent Brothers, is in the London Shadow Market, a place where Downworlders gather to buy, sell, and trade. It is hidden from mundane eyes by glamour. Brother Zachariah, who is a member of the Silent Brothers, encounters Matthew Fairchild. Matthew unexpectedly throws his arm around Brother Zachariah and calls him “Uncle Jem.”

Two years earlier, Matthew had been among the students at the Shadowhunter Academy in Idris.
