Point of View

Gather is written from the first-person perspective of its protagonist, Dorian Gray “Ian” Henry, or Ian as he is mostly called and referred to. Despite his youth, Ian is sharp and understands a lot of what goes on around him, even when it is clear the adults in his life would like to hide things from him. For example, in the first chapter, Ian can tell that his mother and Aunt Terry are trying to hide the truth of his mother’s addiction from him. “You can see Aunt Terry looking at my mom like this is the story she, meaning Aunt Terry, wants to feed me. I know it’s bullshit, but I can’t think of a good way to ask anything” (2).
