Summary

“Chapter One: Tuesday, November 2: 11:55 a.m.” introduces Tamaya, a fifth grader at the private school, Woodridge Academy, in Heath Cliff, Pennsylvania. At lunch, she and her friends sat with a group of older boys who told them a creepy story about a deranged hermit who lived in the woods that surrounded their school and who could only eat pre-chewed meat fetched to him by his loyal wolves. Tamaya’s parents were divorced and she spent most of the summer with her dad in Philadelphia. When she came back, she always felt out of touch with her peers. When one of the older boys, Chad, stood up on the table and showed a rip in his jeans that he claimed came from one of the wolves, Tamaya said that he was not allowed in the woods.
