Kirk's Apartment

Kirk's apartment symbolizes stability. When Rachel learns that Kirk broke up with Saul after Saul's diagnosis, she is disgusted. She realizes this means that Saul will have to leave his home with Kirk. Saul remains in the apartment for some time because he has little mone and cannot afford a comfortable place on his own. After he leaves Kirk's apartment, he is thrust into the unknown. Once he returns to the apartment at the story's end, he is returning to a place of comfort and security.

Buddha Statue

The Buddha statue Saul gives to Rachel symbolizes faith. One night Rachel finds Nadia praying to the statue for Saul's recovery. This image inspires Rachel's considerations about prayer and belief. She does not have much hope attached to Saul's recovery, yet seeing Nadia with the statue catalyzes a shift in her thinking.
