Summary

Chapter 1 begins with a section entitled “Us” in which the ghost of Chika visits Albom to ask why he is not writing. She died the past spring but has been appearing to Albom, encouraging him to start working on the book he intends to write about her. He tells her that he does not know why he is not writing, but he is lying, his friends have told him he needs more time. He wonders if he is not writing because he knows he will have to accept the reality that she is gone. Chika points out to Albom that the following day will be the anniversary of her death. She says she does not want him to forget her. He says that he will tell her the story of “you and me” (7). Chika asks for the story of “us” (7).
