Host's Apartment

The opening chapter of the novel takes place at Lionel's former classmate's apartment. Throughout the novel, this character is referred to simply as the host, rather than by name. Though Lionel has only been out of the hospital for a few days when he receives the host's potluck invitation, he decides to attend. When he first arrives, he stands outside in the cold, and observes the guests through the window. Once inside, he feels simultaneously alive and uncomfortable. The guests' conversations seem impenetrable. Over the course of the night, Lionel alternates between conversations with Charles and Sophie. The setting is significant, in that it is the place Lionel, Charles, and Sophie first meet. Throughout the novel, they frequently return to this night and place in their thoughts and conversations.
