Lionel

Lionel is one of the main characters of the novel. He grew up in Michigan, the only child of divorced parents. After they split up, Lionel spoke to his father fairly regularly. However, their conversations were often void of substance.

From a young age, Lionel always had an interest in math. Some of his favorite memories are from math camp in Tennessee. Throughout the narrative present, Lionel often reflects on these days with fondness and longing.

After completing his undergraduate degree, Lionel pursued a graduate degree in applied mathematics. Though Lionel enjoyed the academic work and community, halfway into his program his depression and anxiety consumed him. He attempted suicide. His parents arrived in town, and scolded him for his inability to care for himself. After a six month stint in a psychiatric hospital, Lionel attempted to return to his former life.
