Summary

Benjamin begins to give up hope that Fiela will ever come rescue him as the days pass. Elias is on an elephant hunting trip and expects his children to continue working in his absence. When Elias returns home, he is uncharacteristically secretive and takes Lukas and Nina into the forest the next day without giving them an explanation for why. He makes them dig a large pit, telling them it is for elephants, although they are hesitant.

Nina tells Lukas that she tried to run away as well and made it far into the forest. She tells him about the many elephants she saw in the forest. When they return home, they learn that Fiela came to the house to look for Lukas and bring him some of his belongings. Elias tells Lukas that he would have Fiela killed if he could, and...
