Point of View

The novel is narrated in the past tense from the third person limited perspective, alternating between the points-of-view of Helen Nash and Vikram Bhatnagar, two Universally Displaced Persons (UDPs) from an alternate universe. Both of these characters are grieving the loss of their former lives and loved ones, but they take solace in each other, having been romantic partners for two years, though it is clear that Vikram wants a more serious and intimate relationship than Hel is willing to give him.

As these points-of-view alternate, the reader gradually comes to realize that Hel and Vikram are entirely disconnected from one another. The reason for this is Hel's reticence to get close to anyone. Consequently, these two characters often seem to be aimlessly circling, never quite connecting in any significant way.
