Summary

Stage directions describe Jasmine leaving and Beverly continuing to peel carrots, then taking Tyrone’s phone call. Suze tells Bets that being Slavic is not a different race. Before Bets can respond, Jimbo pushes Suze to reveal her answer to the question of which race she would choose to be. She says that she would choose to be African-American. Jimbo says that that does not make sense, talking about how difficult it is to be African-American. Suze then speaks at length about how she was raised by an African-American woman named Mabel, who cared for her in ways that her parents never did. She also describes how Mabel fed her “corn bread and collard greens / like food that regular people don’t even eat” (51), adding that food is one of the things that ties people together.
