Summary

The following evening, the narrator “waited hours for the call from the hospital” (280). She sat at her computer anticipating the FaceTime alert. Meanwhile, Livvy emailed and texted with directions for the narrator to give Dan’s nurses. The narrator feared “Livvy’s patient advocacy” would get Dan killed (280).

When the call came, the narrator could not tell which nurse she was talking to. She told the narrator Dan was present, but asleep. He looked unwell on the screen. The narrator thanked her for the call, promising “to connect with him tomorrow” (281). The nurse in turn promised to send the narrator photos of Dan sleeping. She cheerily said goodbye. The narrator guessed her demeanor would change after “the iPad went dark” (281).
