Reservoir

The reservoir is symbolic of the unknown. The reservoir is the area where both Kim and Dean disappeared and died. For this reason, the reservoir seems to contain unsolvable mysteries. The reservoir places the characters into confrontation with the unknown and the unexpected.

Ferris Wheel

The ferris wheel is symbolic of clarity. While Falk is on the ride, he realizes how much he can see from up top. Later, while observing the ride from the ground, he experiences a revelation about Kim's case. The ferris wheel ultimately leads Falk to the truth.

Wood Chips

The wood chips from Dean's accident are symbolic of grief. Although six years have passed since his father's death, Joel retains these chips form the guardrail where Dean was killed. His inability to get rid of the chips mirrors his inability to get over losing his father.
