Summary
In 1998, Keldy Mabel Gonzáles Brebe de Zúniga, 14, is living in Honduras when the nation is devastated by Hurricane Mitch. Around seventy percent of the country's crops are destroyed, not to mention infrastructure. Three of Keldy's brothers immigrate to the U.S., while she stays with their mother, Amanda. The two move in with Keldy's eldest brother, who works as a policeman, specifically targeting gangs. He is required to wear a ski mask when he works to protect his identity, and Keldy is not allowed to tell schoolmates what her brother does for work.
Keldy meets her future husband, Mino Zúniga, when she is seventeen. They have their first child in 2001, and another in 2004. One of Keldy's other brothers is killed, and in 2006, with the global recession, the Honduran economy is hit hard. Mino and Keldy leave their sons with Amanda and...
