Summary

Chapter 1 introduced Eleanor Oliphant, the first-person narrator. Eleanor works in an office, where she has worked for the past nine years, and has had the same routine nearly every day since. She reflected on her visit to the doctor during the previous day. She complained to her doctor about her breasts causing her back pain. The doctor prescribed her painkillers and renewed her eczema medication. Returning to the present day, Eleanor thought about how she had met the love of her life the previous night.

In Chapter 2, Eleanor overheard some of her coworkers talking about her in the office. They said that she was crazy. Eleanor revealed through her thoughts that the man who transfixed her the previous night was a musician named Johnnie Lomond. She had won tickets to a concert from the office lottery and asked her coworker Billy to come...
