Summary

These pages are part of Book Five titled The Pine Barrens. The Book opens with two startling announcements: Edgar has been missing for six days and Lucy is pregnant with Ron, the butcher’s, baby. Lucy cannot help but think that Frank’s letter contained important clues, and she regrets burning it. She reports Edgar missing on the first day he doesn’t come back from school. The detective assigned to the case, Rebecca Mann, firmly believes that Edgar ran away because Lucy was abusing him. She focuses the beginning of her investigation on Lucy until Lucy cracks, verbally attacking the detective with enough passion that Ms. Mann believes in Lucy’s innocence and devotion to Edgar.
