Summary

Chapter 16 is titled “William.” William is walking to the shop when Ruby jumps out and scares him. Over the course of their conversation, William loses his hat and Ruby chases it into the street, directly into the path of a milk truck. The truck has to slam on its brakes to avoid hitting her and the driver is furious. William lies, saying Ruby's mother is his family's maid, and that he told her to get the hat. William knows the driver could whip Ruby and that no one would do anything to stop it. William gives the man money, for the damage and his trouble, and drags Ruby away.
