Chapter 1 is titled “Rowan.” Rowan is a 17-year-old girl living in modern times in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Though no one in Tulsa ever walks in respect for the town's rich oil history, Rowan's car has been totaled. She is on the way to talk to the district attorney in the hope that she can make a difference in one situation. The story line then picks up on Rowan's first day of summer break, a few days before her meeting with the district attorney. She plans to sleep late but contractors wake her early.
