Summary

Sophie completes the annulment of her marriage to Ezra. The narrator describes the emotional toll that the divorce has taken on Sophie. The years of her marriage seem to be removed completely from her life and she is left trying to bridge the years of her life before Ezra to her present experience.

This causes Sophie to recollect her experiences leaving Hungary. She recalls the boat trip to America, and her experiences in a Jewish neighborhood. She remembers her experience living in Pittsburgh, while she follows the events of World War II on the radio, to which she feels closer than she does to her present surroundings. Eventually Sophie lives briefly in New York City with her father, which she enjoys, until they move to Garfield, where Sophie attends high school and develops an interest in theater.
