Summary

Sophie is traveling on her way to New York to meet with Ivan. On the way, Sophie reflects on her life and her marriage with Ezra. The narrator describes in further detail the marriage of Ezra and Sophie. Sophie reflects on her reservations towards the practice of marriage in general, as well as her own chastity in contrast to Ezra’s philandering behavior. In New York, Ivan presses Sophie for details about her marriage with Ezra.

The narrative then describes Sophie’s arrival in New York. She meets Ivan at his home. They enjoy each other’s company, and ask each other how long they think their love will last. Sophie is then described arriving at Ivan’s home on a separate occasion.
