Point of View

The novel is in first person from the sole perspective of Rowley Jefferson. From early in the novel, Rowley proves that he is not a reliable narrator, mainly because of his perspective. Additionally, sometimes he tries to word his diary entries to make himself look better. For example, Rowley ended the first entry by saying that Greg often gets angry, especially when Rowley “copies” him. He writes that he does not plan to let Greg find out about his diary because Greg has done several of them. In the opening of the next entry, Rowley writes that “Greg found out about my diary” (6). He then amends that statement by admitting that he told Greg about it because he was so proud of himself for beginning this project. Rowley does admit to the truth, but he clearly sets out to mislead the reader with that opening...
