Chapters 20-22 Summary
Chapter 20
At Johnny's next appointment, Mr. Briggs wants to clear the air and asks Johnny if he's gay. He thinks he will get an honest answer now that Johnny knows Mr. Briggs is gay. Johnny truthfully says he likes women. When Mr. Briggs asks Johnny about being a transvestite, Johnny says wearing a dress is new for him and he is still figuring it out. He points out there is nothing wrong with it, and it is not having a bad impact on his life.
Chapter 21
Maria is absent from school. Soon Johnny gets pulled out of class to see Maria's father at the office. Johnny is thinking the worst. He hides his relief when he is told Maria's mother died and Maria has gone to New York for her funeral. Her father asks Johnny to be a listening ear for...
