Summary

After Edward is released from the hospital in Colorado, Lacey and John bring him to their home in West Milford, New Jersey. The town is small, and people in the town are quite excited about Edward’s arrival. Lacey and John are childless, and their inability to conceive has caused something of a rift in their marriage. Next door lives a kind Latina woman named Besa, and her daughter Shay, who is about the same age as Edward. Shay’s father left Besa years ago. Edward asks Lacey and John if took him in due to legal obligations, and they respond sincerely that they did so because he is family. Edward realizes that the crash killed Lacey’s sister (Jane), just as it killed Edward’s brother (Jordan.) That evening, Edward cannot bear to be alone. He goes next door to talk to Shay...
