Summary

In "Matthias," Matthias and Karin try readjusting to the possibility that Lena is dead.

In "Lena," the police tell Jasmin about the real Lena. According to Matthias, she "wanted to be a teacher from a very young age” (75). Others saw her as an irresponsible party girl.

Jasmin then explains that her abductor gave her the forehead scar like Lena's. After he inflicted the wound, he tried comforting her. When she resisted, he brutalized her more. Later he outlined the rules. She and the children were only allowed to eat, drink, and use the bathroom at specific times.

She felt confused by the children's interactions with her. Every night her abductor raped her, insisting she remain compliant. Eventually she discovered there had been a third child. She assumed the man had killed Lena and the baby.
