Summary

Chapter 21 is titled “All I Can Be Is Grateful.” The chapter opens with another excerpt from Chaitanya's post in a reading club chat room. She cites what she learned from Dava, and fears she will never know for sure that Dava was her mother. She says the time they spent together “might have to be enough” (309). Back in Dava's room, Enzo asks what happens next. Dava realizes this is an opportunity to make these last moments with her grandchildren take on mythic proportions. She says they should ask their parents, aunts, and uncles to read the letters Arvid wrote after he knew he was dying. She says she has a few regrets, such as the time she told Arvie he could not grow up to become a superhero. She looks back with the notion she should have had a better answer for him...
