Point of View

The novel is told from two first person points of view, Camino and Yahaira Rios. The novel starts from Camino’s perspective and ends in Yahaira’s. Acevedo delineates which point of view is speaking by starting a new chapter with an airplane pointing in the direction of one of the names, which is bolded. This also indicates the setting of the next section, meaning Camino’s point of view will be set in the Dominican Republic, and Yahaira’s in New York City. However, on page 321 when Yahaira flies to the Dominican Republic, she does not clearly label which voice is speaking or which point of view the reader is reading from, instead she relies on the format and style she uses for each voice that the reader has grown accustomed to, to figure out who is telling the story on any given page...
