Summary

In Part Two, "Western Epistemology," the girls begin high school. At some of the schools, "strange men hang on chain-like fences" leering (37). The girls are afraid. They have heard stories from their families and the news about violence against brown girls. The scariest stories are those their family members and friends have experienced. The girls learn to "remain mute and still," believing invisibility will protect them (38). Some of the girls speak out against the men.

At some of the girls' schools, they are placed in Honors courses. They read literature, knowing they "don't look like anybody in these books" (40).
