Brown Girls Overview

Daphne Palasi Andreades's novel Brown Girls tells the story of a group of brown immigrant girls growing up in Queens, New York. The older the girls grow, the more desperate they become to experience the world beyond their families and home neighborhoods. However, no matter how far the girls travel and how many places they visit and people they meet, they are always drawn back to Queens. Their experiences as individuals and friends teaches the girls the importance of claiming one's voice in order to claim one's true identity. The novel explores themes including, invisibility, friendship, and freedom.
