Summary

As the Civil War begins, Edwin and Mary travel to England, where his performances are not received well; the English public is not endeared to America. Mary gives birth to a girl, who they name Edwina. Edwin tours outside of London to better reviews, but is surprised to find that most of Britain supports the Confederacy.

After deserting the Union Army, Joe disappears. Mother is beside herself until he comes to Edwin’s home in London a few weeks later. Joe is leaving for Australia, where he hopes to become a rancher. Edwin tries to convince Joe to go to June’s home in San Francisco, but Joe does not listen.
