Chapters 8 and 9 Summary

Dirk Pitt, Jr. and Jack Dahlgren investigate the I-403. From military records they pinpoint the approximate location of the sunken sub and spend hours combing the sea floor with sonar until they discover it. They don wetsuits and dive to investigate, exploring the wreckage. Unfortunately, their air supply doesn't allow them to be down for very long, but it's long enough for Pitt to discover that someone else has been down there recently and removed one of the canisters.

Chapters 8 and 9 Analysis

The mystery grows, as it appears someone else is aware of the existence of the Makaze payload and, in fact, beat Pitt and Dahlgren to the sub. Dirk notes that someone had gone to a lot of trouble to acquire a bomb, and as they talk about it on the surface, it appears there are more questions than answers...
