Summary

Section 1 is titled “Monkey Donkey Owl (1998).” Chapter 1 opens with Harper waking in the middle of the night in a hut near the Ayung River in Indonesia. He is in hiding in the hills from his firm because he fears they are trying to kill him. He hears noises on the roof and believes it to be them, but could be a monkey or rain pattering. He looks around for Kadek, a local man who helps him. Kadek arrives and offers to bring breakfast. Harper writes a letter to his ex-wife Francisca. He thinks about what may happen to him will affect Francisca and his mother Anika.
