Chapter 3 Summary

Despite his protests to Dixie Lee, Dave decides to speak to a representative of Star Drilling about Dixie Lee's claims of murder by Vidrine and Mapes. While having lunch prior to approaching the oil company, Dave sees his ex-partner in the parking lot of the diner. Cletus Purcel was once a good cop who turned bad and ran off to South America with money paid to him for killing a government witness. Dave is surprised to see Clete back in the States. At Star, Dave speaks to a Mr. Hollister about Dixie Lee's claims. When the subject of the death of Dave's father comes up, Mr. Hollister threatens to have Dave arrested if he does not leave. A few days later, Dave tells a depressed Dixie Lee that he cannot help him any more.
