Summary

Chapter 23 returns to the text of Billy’s novel. Alice asked Billy why Klerke would want sex with girls who were so young. Billy told her that Klerke was just looking for sex, not a relationship. Alice muttered under her breath that Klerke was a monster.

Alice directed Billy to Klerke’s house. The driveway started out as a dirt road, but turned to a paved drive after the first hill. When they reached the gate and a call box, Klerke’s assistant asked Billy and Alice to get out of the car and stand on an “x” drawn on the driveway. Billy was told to leave his gun at the gatepost.

When Billy and Alice were at the house, the assistant sensed something was wrong and pulled his gun. Billy knocked the gun away and sprayed him with Carfentnil, a drug used...
