Ruby Lennox

Ruby Lennox is the main character of this novel. When we first meet Ruby she has just been conceived. She knows all the things her mother feels and thinks. She knows her mother is not happy with the way her life has turned out. However, once she is born she can no longer tell what her mother feels any more.

When Ruby is four years old her twin sister Pearl dies while they are at their uncle's house. She drowns in his pond and Ruby watches from the bank while her twin yells for her to help her. When her parents arrive, her sister Gillian tells them that Ruby was the one to push her into the water. The truth is it was Gillian who was telling Pearl to walk out on the ice.
