Laurent: First Day Among the Ponies Summary

When Laurent and Tristan are taken to the stables, they meet Gareth, their groom, who explains a little about pony life, such as the fact that they are proud animals. The Captain then tells the slaves that being a pony is not just another aspect of their slavery but a "way of life unto itself". At Gareth's command, Tristan and Laurent march to the last stall where they are instructed to bend at the waist and lap the water in the trough. As Gareth grooms his new charges, their dinner is brought to them. They are directed to devour the hot soup as a horse rather than a human.
