Liz Curtis Higgs is a nationally known writer and speaker. She has written several fiction and non-fiction books. She states at several points that she has a past that was sinful until she met Christ. Although she doesn't give specifics about her past, she says that it included drugs, sex, and other earthly temptations. She is now married and has several children.

Bad Girls of the Bible began as Higgs was researching women of the Bible for a talk she was giving at a national conference. She found that she identified with and related to the Bad Girls of the Bible more than the Good Girls of the Bible. She says in the introduction that she wants women to know that they are not alone.
