Chapter 7, Knockin' on Heaven's Door Summary and Analysis

Rae's heart beats fast as she opens the door. Four cops in plain clothes stand on her doorstep. They ask about the two men who've ducked into Rae's door. Rae tries to play innocent, but finally admits that the two men were there, leaving when they discovered her line of business. Rae tells them that the men went south and that she'd appreciate it if they left since she has someone coming. One of the cops says that women like her always are expecting someone.

The two men had knocked on her door earlier, desperate but not dangerous. They'd introduced themselves and said that they'd come from Caltech. The man are seismologists and they study earthquakes. Then the cops had arrived so she told the men to go up to the roof.
