Meg: ‘Fancy doing [a play] night after night like in America. Plays go on for years there. London too. Wouldn’t you get sick of it?’ Tom: “Depends who else was in it. Be great if you hated everyone’s guts.

Importance: This quote is taken from a section of the conversation between Tom and Meg in which they are discussing how fortunate it was that there were only a few performances of the play they were both just in. Within the context of the play as a whole, and particular of Meg's difficult family situation, there is an implied reference to marriages, or other long term relationships. Tom's comment about it being "great" if everyone hated each other is sarcasm, of a sort that is common to much of Tom's dialogue.
