Atlas

Brene Brown uses the metaphor of an atlas to represent the purpose of her book, which is to “map” the complex network of human emotions. Each chapter’s title includes the phrase “Places We Go.” By comparing emotions to locations, Brown suggests that humans have the power to decide what to feel.

Busy Restaurant

Brown describes the restaurant scene wherein she is a waitress who feels at times “in the weeds” and “blown” in the opening chapter. This chaotic scene assists Brown in describing and differentiating between the emotions of stress and overwhelm.
