The speaker is an unspecified person who’s looking back at their time watching people pass through a crossroads. Little is shared about their own choices or journey; instead, they’re an observer for the many figures who have come here and moved on. The poem does allude to some change in the speaker’s life — they “used to” watch these people, but don’t anymore (Line 13). From this change, the speaker has learned valuable lessons and is now offering them to the reader.
