This scar on Isabel’s cheek is a symbol that she is owned by a master and mistress. It was given to her as a punishment because she attacked her mistress after she separated Isabel and Ruth.

Willow Bark is a symbol of the beneficial things that the woods offers to Isabel and the others as they travel. Isabel uses willow bark to bring down Ruth’s fever and clean her infected cut.
