Chapter 2 Summary

The three weeks until investiture seem like three years to Talia as she memorizes the elaborate ceremony of oaths and bindings while also using her Gift to assess any danger to the Queen or Heir. She also spends an hour at Court daily, debating items of protocol, but Elspeth is spared such nonsense because she is busy with her new classes and duties. Talia is glad to find that the girl is content. The Council meetings disturb Talia because the Councilors and couriers cast fearful glances at her, and she worries about the rumors being circulated. Elspeth does not understand why Talia continues to train with Alberich since the Heir is the better fighter, but Alberich does not want anyone to know how skilled Elspeth truly is, plus crowned heads do not defend themselves.
