Summary

Maddie is nervous when she realizes that she does not have access to any wood-burning fireplaces on her street and the winter will be freezing. She plans to move to her dad’s house with a wood-burning stove, but it will make her trips to the supermarket inconvenient. She decides to try driving the car.

Maddie successfully drives into town. She first attempts to enter the public library but finds it locked. When she gets in through a back door entrance, she is amazed by the rows of books and lack of people. She is looking for any kind of book that will explain how to make a fire. When she finds one about camping, she brings it with her and stocks up on firewood from neighbors’ yards.
