Point of View

The novel is told in the third-person limited perspective with Sunny as the main focus. The only exception to this is the prologue which is told in first person through Sunny’s eyes. This is to establish her deepest worries and fears in order to create sympathy from the readers. The rest of the novel builds off of this introduction, but does not return to that first-person point-of-view. Despite this, there is a sense of closeness to Sunny’s thoughts, especially as she progresses through the stages of her juju education. The reader feels this most prevalent in extremely emotional moments, such as the death of Miknikstic where she is horrified and outraged at the people’s reactions to the battle, and the joy she feels on the soccer field for the first time.
