Before her accident, Emerson was a strong student, raised as a feminist by her professor mother, who spent most of her time outside of school playing video games with her best friend, Christopher, on whom she had an unrequited crush. However, three months before the actions in the book take place, Em was in an accident outside of a Stork Megastore, where her body was crushed by a television display. Her parents were offered the choice to have her brain, which was still functioning, transplanted into the body of Nikki Howard, who they were told had suffered brain damage, and they accepted.
