Summary

Chapter 18 begins as Anjali thinks it is unfair for the Dalits to have to sit at the back of the classroom. Her classmates, however, continue to give her a hard time about the plan, saying she will ruin school. She and Irfaan walk to the store to pick up the tiffins for the Dalits. While there, Irfaan says he has to pick up a pitcher for his father, and asks for an engraving. The angry store owner says there is no point in engraving anything for Irfaan since the Muslims want their own country without Hindus. He says it is better to keep the pitcher blank so a Hindu can use it when Irfaan and his family have to leave everything behind. Anjali says he paid for the pitcher so the man should do the engraving, as tears fall down Irfaan’s face...
