Summary
Chapter XXXIX reveals the grandson of Prince Genji suffered from extreme sensitivity, to the extent that the mere possibility of something happening was enough to make him unwell. One such episode was occurring to him in the monastery. He wished he could find someone there who could help him but he did not find anyone.
Chapter XL describes the hidden garden in the monastery which featured eight hinoki cypress trees. It was hidden in a way that meant anyone passing by would be unlikely to suspect anything was there. The garden is described as being so beautiful that anyone who saw it would not want to attempt to describe it in words, they would simply wish to look at it in silence. In Chapter XLI, the grandson of Prince Genji passed in front of the garden’s entrance.
