Summary

In Chapter 1, Peter Guillam pledges that he is telling the truth as he knows it about Windfall, an operation by the British intelligence service against the East German Intelligence Service. He indicates that the best spy he knew and an innocent woman were killed in that operation.

Peter was born in the early stages of World War II and remembered being sent off to live with his aunt in the country when he was eight. He did not know his father well but was told by the headmaster at the school he was attending that he had died a soldier’s death.
