Summary

In Chapter Thirteen, the following morning, Erec waits in the dining room of the inn for Alistair to give him her answer. She brings out a mug of ale, accidently spilling some when the innkeeper hurries up to her from behind. He yells at her clumsiness, telling her to clean up the mess. As she tries to leave the room, she accidently knocks the mug from the table, spilling the rest of the ale. The innkeeper draws back his hand to slap Alistair but Erec grabs his arm, stopping him. Erec pays the man 300 pence to buy out the remainder of Alistair’s contract, three times the amount that she owes to him. Erec tells the man he can keep the gold even if Alistair does not agree to marry him, just as long as she is set free. When...
