Chapter 54-Epilogue Summary

In chapter fifty-four, Floyd re-enters hibernation, along with Chandra. Katerina expresses envy as the two drift off into sleep. She tells Floyd that Max and Zenia are getting married when they return, and so are she and Walter Curnow.

In chapter fifty-five, the new sun is named Lucifer, or light-bearer. It cuts down the world's need for artificial lighting at night, even if it has seriously jeopardized nocturnal life across the world. The new sun raises many questions, even as mankind adjusts.

In the epilogue, Europans have traveled to the dark and cold side of their planet, and have developed early astronomy and have begun to develop theories about space. There is a monolith floating above their world as well.
